I’m mostly doing these reviews of ongoing yuri manga as I wait for Summer 2016 anime to start. I started blogging at a weird time as Spring 2016 was already well underway, after all.
Honestly, I’m still experimenting with the format for these kinds of reviews. In a nut shell, I want them to be informative yet concise. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns, please let me know!
Series: Comic Girls
Presentation Style: 4koma, monthly
Genres: yuri, slice-of-life, rom-com
Three Sentence Summary: Moeta Kaoruko is a timid mangaka who is older than she looks while Koizuka Koyume is a happy-go-lucky mangaka who is too easily distracted. Listening to advice given from their respective editors, Kaoruko and Koyume both decide to begin living in an all-girls mangaka dormitory. Follow the story of these female mangaka as they attempt to balance writing manuscripts, making friends, and managing school activities.
- The artstyle is cute. I’m probably going to say this for every yuri manga I review, oops. For Comic Girls in particular, the art resembles that of Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka?
- Romantic friendships ahoy! Hugging, sharing futons, dropping suggestive lines, and more! Two complimentary ships seem to receive most of the shiptease, however.
- The typesetting is poorly done in early chapters. As a result, grammatical errors and poorly worded dialogue slightly hinders both understanding and enjoyment. It does slightly improve in later chapters, at least.
Verdict: With an artstyle that is very similiar to that of Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka?, Comic Girls is a sweet story featuring cute girls drawing manga. In my opinion, I think Comic Girls having a small cast of characters is a plus since this means your favorite character is more likely to receive screen time (although GochiUsa‘s larger character cast also has its own benefits, but I won’t get into that here). I can see Comic Girls receiving an anime adaptation sometime in the future. It is just a shame that the group scanlating the series is not the best at typesetting.
Edit: After publishing this review, I found out that Comic Girls was on the cover of Manga Time Kirara MAX’s June 2016 issue! It was also Hanzawa Kaori’s first front cover (she’s been drawing manga for over 10 years)!
