Star Driver – My Favorite Mecha Show

30-Day Anime Challenge
Day 11: Favorite Mecha Show

I wouldn’t say I’m very knowledgeable about mecha shows, either, but I’ve watched a handful of them. One thing I’ve noticed is that many of them take themselves too seriously.

Not this show. Not Star Driver.

It’s a campy show that doesn’t shy away from fanservice. It does skimp a bit on actual explanation which leaves viewers a little confused. However, that seems to be a common theme for mecha series. There’s just too much cool stuff happening and the viewers don’t want to sit through long monologues of technobabble. It’s a tough act to balance.

It’s not actually that great a show, but I remembered loving how flashy it was. These days, though, I probably would not be as appreciative of the fanservice scenes; high school Remy was a different person. Plus the way some characters behaved in certain situations pissed me off as a viewer. Granted, those were high-tension-and-stress moments so they probably weren’t thinking straight, but still.

Now that I think about it, however, I’m only half correct when I claim that the show doesn’t take itself seriously. There’s actually a lot of dramatic moments with character breaking down and hopes being crushed. But there’s also some goofy moments, too, so there’s that.

At any rate, I apparently liked Star Driver enough to the point that I wrote about the show as part of the take-home midterm essays for my general education class (gender studies) as a college freshman. If you’re really bored, you can read it here.

What are your opinions about mecha shows? Do you think their tendency to become train wrecks as endearing or predictable?

  1. It certainly is a flashy show. I’m not a big mecha fan and Star Driver didn’t do a lot for me (though it certainly is watchable – and quite distinct in some ways). Thanks for sharing.
