Idol Jihen Episode 3 Review – “Nyanway Generation”

This show is incredibly formulaic.

(Spoilers in this review)

Summary:

Natsuki, Shizuka, and Sachie head to a site where there’s a problem (in this case, cats have disappeared from this cat island where cats and humans co-exist). They catch a glimpse of an antagonistic politician (some lady who hates cats because they were treated better than her while she was growing up) before bumping into fellow Idol Dietwomen.

They bumble around for a bit while Natsuki proves she’s amazing. Then the two Idol Dietwomen parties join forces which allows Natsuki to prove she’s destined to be an Idol Dietwomen. The resulting concert convinces the mean politician to switch sides and everything is resolved (aka the cats run on water to return to the island like they’re all Sons of God or something. This is not explained). The episode ends with the same two men making cryptic threats against Idol Dietwomen.

Thoughts on this Episode:

  • So when I say this show is formulaic, I mean that the same events will probably in each episode. Natsuki and the Heroine Party team up with another Idol Dietwomen from a different party; Natsuki will demonstrate that she’s incredible and deserves to be an Idol Dietwomen; singing and dancing will solve all the problems and convert the politicians who are acting as antagonists for this episode; two shady men will chuckle while twiddling their thumbs.
  • I actually was led astray by the lingering camera shots on the old lady. Fell hook, line, and sinker for that one! Like, I mistakenly thought she had rounded all the cats and each bowl of udon soup had cat or something, wow! Good thing I was wrong.
  • It was nice seeing Shizuka being afraid of something for once (cats).
  • The animation remains sloppy. How can a concert feature characters not moving for several frames at all? Quite crude, to be honest. The insert songs remain not very memorable at all.

tl;dr – the show revealed its stance on “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” (except Idol Jihen doesn’t fix anything). A subpar idol show thus far with the same set-up for every episode as well as nothing original, in my opinion. Natsuki will continue to prove to everyone she’s special as she makes friends with other Idol Dietwomen.

  1. I have a very serious question. i may have missed this in your earlier posts or simply forgotten but…why are they called Dietwomen? That reminds me of dietitians.

    1. I believe Japanese politicians are part of the Diet. It’s a bit strange, I’ll admit.

Wikipedia has my back here I think.

“The National Diet (国会 Kokkai) is Japan’s bicameral legislature. It is composed of a lower house called the House of Representatives, and an upper house, called the House of Councillors. Both houses of the Diet are directly elected under parallel voting systems.”
