J.C. Staff has brought us a magical girl series that has trouble distinguishing itself from other shows within said genre.
(Spoilers in this review)
I guess it’s refreshing to see a return to a more traditional magical girl setup with a optimistic protagonist (who shares a similar dream of being a hero like Yuna from Yuki Yuna) who actually does something. However, it’s very much a typical magical girl show and I can’t think of anytihing that can make it stand out.
I guess we will have to see if Twin Angel Break adheres to the old standard (think Sailor Moon or Card Captor Sakura) or if it’ll chase after Madoka or other similar subversions. Actual explanation remains to be delivered!
I found out afterwards that this show is a spin-off of sorts for Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel, which aired in 2008. That explains the girls in the OP. Speaking of which, Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel was originally a slots machine game, which is referenced in the OP.
Here’s Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel (why are there three girls, though?)The women who inspired Meguru to want to become a hero.
The obligatory mascot, Miruku. Why does he have three medals?I like the girl on the left. Teary friends are great. Our main character, Meguru! She spends a few minutes using her instant camera.A fated encounter.“Wow, that’s one weird coin.”Meuguru embarrasses herself trying to wave at Sumire, who ignores her.Chiyori is good at snarking.I really like Urara’s character design.…doesn’t wearing that get unbearably warm, Koromi.I must admit that the school uniform for St Cherrine academy is cute. Not sure about the cherries, though.ACTUALLY YUKI IS THE BEST CHARACTER“Being a hero isn’t as easy as you think.”You can determine a schoolgirl’s social standing based on her bento. Or so I’ve heard.Sumire is rich!Sumire also doesn’t want to share food. Meguru just wanted to thank her, though.Eyecatch #1Eyecatch #2Meguru’s classmates headed to see a performance from some sketchy dude.It turns out he’s sucking up their energy. Lamb girl is still smiling, though. The mascot pops up and tells Meguru to attach the medal to the egg thing.Strange that Meguru knew what to say, but sure.Oh my gosh, her middle and index finger.BOOM the ring popped outFancy shoes!Thighs!Cute frilly skirt!Lookin’ cool, Meguru!I guess the ring is important to her transformation. What if someone cuts off her middle finger? … sorry, that was too morbid.MAGICAL GIRL REPORTING FOR DUTYShe was actually doing pretty well with her stick/flail until the dude revealed that he’s into bondage.Oh, help has arrived! This magical girl’s design is decidely more Eastern. How the heck is he defending against her weapon with a glorified pick? That’s what you get when you try to teleport behind your opponent!Ahh everyone’s energy is restored. And the mascot is doing something sketchy. Maybe I’m paranoid. Can’t believe that Meguru couldn’t recognize who her back-up was. Too bad Sumire doesn’t want to be a Twin Angel anymore. She only helped today out of revenge. One day they will be even closer than how they are in the photo.Uh, apparently this guy was the strongest of the Four Heavenly Kings???Twins, I guess. What exactly are the Twin Angel’s opponents? They don’t seem human. This girl is like a purple bee or something.

I didn’t even hear of this one before. Sure looks like your run of the mill magical girl show. I used to like those little transformation sequences but no clue if I still will.

Yeah it is probably one of the less popular shows I’m covering his season.
I like ’em when they’re not excessively sexual. This one passes.

Fair enough. Magical girls often look very young, making the whole sexual aspect disturbing.
