One last anime season before the year is over! It just sort of bleeds into the following year, too…
At any rate, I will start things off by saying that I probably won’t be doing episode reviews for any of these series. I know some individuals like reading my thoughts on various episodes and series, but it’s been proving more trouble than what it’s worth. I’ll be whipping up editorials on simulcast series instead, so look forward to that!
P.S.: I tried doing something new for the featured image. Let me know if you like for me to continue doing so!
Without further ado, these are the yuri / possibly yuri / not-yuri shows I’ve been eyeing!
These be second seasons of series that I enjoyed watching.
Love Live! Sunshine!! 2nd Season
Given that I used to excessively retweet Love Live! content on my Twitter, did anyone ever doubt this would make the cut? It’s not a joke!
Anyways, I’m looking forward to seeing how these underdog idols progress!
Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru: Yuusha no Shou
The second season to my favorite mahou shoujo series is finally here! From what I can gather, the series has been split into two halves – the first 6 episodes will be a prequel that takes place 3 years prior to the original series and will be focusing on the life of Tougo (who was known as Sumi Washio back then) as she and her friends fight Vertexes. The other 6 episodes are a sequel to the original series.
…it’s been 3 years since the original series first aired and the coincidence in timing makes me feel happy…
The first 6 episodes are going to be released as 3 movies prior to the broadcasts, so I imagine there will be some discussion on the series before the episodes actually air. This sort of setup should have happened for Wake Up Girls!
Wake Up, Girls! Shin Shou
Speaking of which, guess who’s getting another anime season?
It’ll be taking place after the third movie, Wake Up, Girls! Beyond the Bottom. The order, for those of you who aren’t in the know or forgot, went Wake Up, Girls! Shichinin no Idol –> Wake Up, Girls -> Wake Up, Girls! Seishun no Kage -> Wake Up, Girls! Beyond the Bottom. That sort of arrangement hurt the series, probably, since the more casual viewers wouldn’t bother with watching 3 anime movies.
But we’re here to focus on the positive side of things! The animation shown in the PV look crisp (and brighter than earlier installments)! I’m hoping it’s a lot more fluid and less off-model compared to the first season so people will stop looking down on WUG-chan. They’re gourmet potatoes, okay?!
Looks like there’s going to be another idol group called Run Girls, Run! And I-1 is being led by some new girl, too. Hm.
NON-SEQUELS (POTENTIALLY YURI)
There’s a first time for everything! Some are anime original and some are not (it’s actually evenly split).
Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou
Looks like a post-apocalyptic setting featuring characters that could have walked out of a 4koma series that was being published in Manga Time Kirara.
But Made in Abyss has demonstrated that moeblobs are not automatically safe from harm. If the setting calls for it, bodily harm will happen, etc.
Be that as it may, this looks more like a series discussing the implications of being alone as well as what it means to experience emptiness. Frankly, I really don’t know anything about Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou so I’m just babbling here, but I can’t wait to find out firsthand.
I’m ready for cute foxgirls working in an otherworldly hotel spring inn.
In order to celebrate their 10th anniversary, Silver Link is announcing this original anime featuring competitive motorcycle sidecar racing! Wow, Silver Link has only been around 10 years? It feels like they’ve been pumping out shows that I always end up watching for a lot longer than that…
Um…three girls team up with an alien girl to fight off other aliens who want to steal their district’s culture.
This one here is an anime original. I have no idea what to expect.
No PV at this time.
Shows that don’t really feature yuri but I’ll be watching, anyways…probably.
UQ Holder!: Mahou Sensei Negima! 2
It’s with a heavy heart that I say I’ll be watching this. Mahou Sensei Negima! was my lifeblood when I was younger. It defined my middle school and high school years. However, I’m only talking about the manga. There were various anime adaptations, but they were all very lackluster due to to focusing on fanservice or featuring seasons of inane non-canon filler.
I’ve been following UQ Holder! for 3 years now and it’s different from the Mahou Sensei Negima! I knew. It does provide an in-universe explanation regarding the rushed happy ending for Mahou Sensei Negima! (the explanation in real life is that the author was about to lose his rights to his intellectual property so he had to rush the ending. How messed up is that? Poor Ken). The PV has me worried that people will consider the series to be trashy when it…sort of is, I guess, since the fanservice is very prominent in both UQ Holder! and in Mahou Sensei Negima! (the anime adaptations for MSN! simply went too far, however). I just hope the series does well.
The fact that the PV features the OP from one of those failed anime adaptations for Mahou Sensei Negima! as the background music has me worried. Ahhhhhhhh
Shows That I Probably Should Be Watching
Himouto! Umaru-chan R – haven’t finsihed the first season yet
3-gatsu no Lion 2 – haven’t finished the first season yet
Mahoutsukai no Yome – haven’t watched the OVAs but the hype backlash has already cause me to turn away. I’m a hipster at heart! I’ll probably end up picking it up several weeks into the season like I did with Made in Abyss.
…That’s all, folks!
