The Winter 2018 Anime I Plan to Watch!

It’s that time of year again.

Well, it’s also a little early. But I figured I should get this out sooner rather than later. Same ol’ deal. First up are the yuri shows / girls club shows. Next are the non-yuri shows. Last are the shows that I probably should be watching as an anime fan or a yuri fan but aren’t (along with reasons why).

Yuri / Girls Club Shows

Citrus

Genres: Drama, Romance, Yuri, School

Studio: Passioine

Summary: Fashionable Yuzu imagined the first day at her new school she transferred to after her mother’s remarriage a bit differently; she didn’t know it’d be an ultra-strict and conservative girls’ school. So instead of a sweet high-school romance, she butts heads with the stern student council president Mei—who turns out to be her new step sister. And she has to learn that hate and attraction are often not that far apart.

Thoughts: I consider the manga source material to be cliché and excessively melodramatic. We’ll see if that’s how it’ll be for the anime adapatation, right? Not expecting much, though.

Märchen Mädchen

Genres: Fantasy, Magic, School

Studio: Hoods Entertainment

Summary: Hazuki Kagimura is a normal girl who is usually alone. With her relationship with her new family not going so well, she retreats every day to the world of stories and books. One day, after school, one of the library’s bookshelves sends her to another world with a magic school, where she meets Shizuka Tsuchimikado. She finds out that girls (called “mädchen”) who attend the school are selected by old fairy tails and folk stories to wield their magic, and are taught how to wield it in the school. The school has girls who are chosen by such stories as Kaguya-hime no Monogatari, Issun-boushi, Der Freischütz, Shuten-douji, The Little Matchstick Girl, The Gigantic Turnip, Arthurian legends, and The Ramayana. Hazuki herself is chosen by the Cinderella story. She begins her new life at the school to become a magic user, and be friends with Shizuka.

Thoughts: There was only like 3 cute girls in that trailer, what the heck. Excluding the onee-san and onii-san, of course. I want more! At any rate, this seems to be a series about girls and magic. Should be fun!

Toji no Miko

Genres: Action, Fantasy, School

Studio: Studio Gokumi

Summary: There’s an evil creature called Aratama that attack people, and a group of Miko has been exorcising those creatures using swords since olden times. Those who wear uniforms and swords are called Toji, who are officially called Tokubetsu Saishi Kitoutai (Special Ritual Maneuver Team) in the police association. They are officially approved of wielding the swords by the government officials. The government has established five training schools consisting of junior and senior high levels for the female students to attend. They spend their student life normally, and use special skills with the swords when they’re doing missions to protect people. In the spring, these five schools are to take part in a competition. Among the girls who train for the competition, there’s a girl who’s a bit more passionate than any other girls. Where would the girl with the sword aim?

Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san

Genres: Comedy

Studio(s): Studio Gokumi, AXsiZ

Summary: Koizumi is a mysterious and attractive high school student. But what most people don’t know about her is that she’s a ramen master who is always on the lookout for great ramen restaurants. Everyday, she goes hunting for real-life places serving the best ramen dishes and delightfully eats the delicious noodles. The way Koizumi downs a giant bowl of ramen–more adeptly than any large man–will amaze and delight you!

Hakumei to Mikochi

Genres: Fantasy, Slice-of-life

Studio: Lerche

Summary: Nine centimeters (3.5 inches) tall, the tiny girls Hakumei and Mikochi live in the forest. Living in a tiny house in a tree, riding insects and birds, and making umbrellas out of leaves, these tiny girls live a tiny life. Follow their tiny but lovely lives as they live their day to day in a fantastic world of tiny people and gods.

Yuru Camp△

Genres: Comedy, Seinen

Studio: C-Station

Summary: Rin likes to go camping by herself along the lakes that provide a scenic view of Mt. Fuji. Nadeshiko loves to take cycling trips by herself to places where she can see Mt. Fuji. After they meet, Rin and Nadeshiko take camping trips, eat cup ramen together, and enjoy the scenery.

Takunomi.

Genres: Comedy, Slice-of-life

Studio: Production IMS

Summary: 20-year-old Michiru Amatsuki moved to Tokyo due to a change of career. She decided to live in a woman-only share house “Stella House Haruno” with people of different age and occupations. It’s always fun when there’s delicious alcohol and meals!

Slow Start

Genres: Comedy, Slice-of-life, School

Studio: A-1 Pictures

Summary: Hana Ichinose is a normal 16-year-old high school student. However, there is something different about her: she enrolled in high school one year late! Her classmates are unaware of this, and Hana will have to work hard to catch up with everyone else.

Thoughts: Er… that’s the source of tension and conflict in this series? She’s actually one year older than rest of her peers or something? Well, okay…

Uchuu yorimo Tooi Basho

Genres: Adventure

Studio: Madhouse

Summary: Original anime centering on high school girls going to the South Pole.

Mitsuboshi Colors

Genres: Comedy, Slice-of-life

Studio: Silver Link

Summary: The “Colors” are three cute little girls who hang out together and say they’re protecting the peace of their city. They have lots of fun together, doing stuff like playing games, solving puzzles, and going to the zoo. This manga follows their largely happy daily life.

The Other Shows

Violet Evergarden

Why: Because it’s Kyo Ani. Have to at least give it a shot, right?

Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san

Why: I read a few chapters of the manga. It’s funny and kind of cute to see the male be led around. With the anime community glorifying smug girls, I can imagine this series becoming very popular.

The Neglected

Kaijuu Girls: Ultra Kaijuu Gijinka Keikaku 2nd Season

Why Not: Because I still need to watch the first season.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes: Arsene Karei naru Yokubou

Why Not: Very behind on this franchise, too.

Hugtto! Precure

Why Not: I haven’t watched a single episode of Precure in my life, fool that I am.

Nanatsu no Bitoku

Why Not: This is related to Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai. I am almost positive that this will be riddled with fanservice, too. But…maybe I should give it a shot, anyways.

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card-hen

Why Not: I grew up watching the dub of the original series, but I can’t remember most of it. Plus the dub changes things around, apparently. I should probably bingewatch the original series or read the manga before so I can keep up with everyone else!

  3. Hey! I just stumbled across your blog and I like your style of writing, although I’m not really into Yuri anime as such (Yuri on Ice is ❤ tho :P).

    You should really give Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso a watch, I think you'll love it given your taste~

      Oh, wow! That’s really nice of you to say. And no worries. To each their own, right? (Yuri on Ice really was a good show, I agree)

      You know, I resisted the series for several years since (misguided) individuals were so quick to tear it down, but I watched it along with Weekend Otaku last year during his Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso re-watch feature and I had a blast. Thank you for the recommendation, though!

  5. Yeah, having seen both, the CCS dub might as well be a completely different series. If all you’ve seen is Cardcaptors, then you haven’t seen CCS at all. CCS is actually my second favorite magical girl after Yuki Yuna, and according to people I’ve talked to who’ve read the Clear Card manga you do need to have read/seen it before you start the newer series, but at 70 episodes it is a big time commitment. The manga at 12 volumes would be faster depending on your reading speed, albeit not as convenient as just pulling up Crunchyroll. The manga and anime stories differ in some ways and I personally prefer the anime’s version, but either one should have you ready for Clear Card no problem.

    BTW, CCS itself was one of the two biggest influences on Nanoha during its early development phase (the other was Gundam, of all things). That’s largely disappeared by the time you get to StrikerS, but you can see it especially in the first few episodes of the first TV season, which were very CCS-like until the series started finding its own voice and rhythm.

    I haven’t even looked at the list of what’s coming out in the winter yet – I’m still too far behind on the Fall shows I’m watching.

    1. Mmmm I’m trying to catch up on CCS as we speak. But, yeah, the dub sounds soooo different! I’m looking forward to (re)visiting your second favorite magical series!

      Mmm I imagine that to be the case. I followed your advice and just watched the movie and I have to admit the opening was very reminiscent to what little I remember from the CCS dub. But then it definitely branched out!

      I feel you. Too many shows!

      1. The movie actually toned that down a lot. Until Fate becomes a major character around midseason, most of season 1’s first half is CCS-light with Nanoha following Yuno on fetch quests, learning how to use magic, and trying to juggle her relationships with her family and friends with her new responsibilities. It’s good for getting to know what her normal life is like and what motivates her, but none of it is very important to the plot in the long run, which is why the movie chose to skip over most of it.

        Hope you enjoy (the real) CCS!
