Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon Episode 6 – “Home Visit! (And Homes Not Visited)

The thematic episodes continue (along with Riko’s crush on Kanna, Quetzalcoatl’s excessive animation, and Fafnir’s dry charm).

In my opinion, this episode was split into three general segments and each one tackled this overarching theme of acceptance in its own way.

The first segment has Kanna being invited to Riko’s house to play and to meet her family’s maid. Tohru and Kobayashi tag along. Riko’s family’s maid, who’s actually Riko’s older sister and who merely likes to pretend being a maid, is a huge maid fanatic and hits it off really well with Kobayashi. Tohru attempts to keep up with the maid maniacs to no avail.

Meanwhile, Kanna and Riko play Twister and then some sort of racing game (it resembles Mario Kart) in Riko’s room. While playing said video game, Kanna asks Riko if she’s actually getting along with her classmates and admits to wanting a relationship similiar to the one between Kobayashi and Tohru. This gives Riko the courage to say that she really likes Kanna (and that she wants to marry Kanna!), which in turn causes Kanna to push Riko down while insisting that they should get even closer. Unfortunately for Riko (and Kanna), the others barge in and interrupt their intimacy.

According to the way I see it, three different characters are craving acceptance in this segment. Tohru desperately wants to prove to Kobayashi that she’s not just a cosplaying maid, but Kobayashi seems more interested in Georgie who shares Kobayashi’s passion in regards to real maids. As such, Tohru isn’t really acknowledged (in this scene).

Kanna had stated in episode 4 that she wants to fit in with humans. By this point in time, her classmates and teacher(s) have all accepted her, but Kanna has also realized that what she wants isn’t universal acceptance. What Kanna wants is an unique bond between her and a special someone. I’m not sure if the relationship between Kobayashi and Tohru is an ideal goal to strive for, by the way, but that’s probably the best example Kanna has access to.

Riko shares similar sentiments but wants that special someone to be Kanna. Kanna doesn’t seem opposed to Riko’s affections thus far, at least. The jury is still out on these two!

The second segment focuses on Quetzalcoatl, also known as Lucoa, who had allowed herself to be summoned by a young mage named Shouta. Lucoa has grown attached to the boy and thus declares that she’s also going to start living in this world. However, Lucoa is a bit bothered that Shouta’s family believes her to be a demon when she’s actually an ex-goddess / dragon. As such, she calls over Tohru and Kobayashi to help him believe her claims.

Unfortunately for Lucoa, Shouta not only continues to believe Lucoa’s a demon, but he also refuses her offers to give his family an abundance of gold, vast magical power, powerful charisma, etc. Apparently being accepted is meaningless if he doesn’t do it through his own hard work. The kid’s got a solid head on his shoulders!

In this segment, both Shouta and Lucoa (like Tohru, Kanna, and Riko) are seeking acceptance to some degree. Shouta claims that he tried summoning a demon in order to be accepted as a full-fledged mage. In other words, he was seeking approval and Lucoa was just a means to that end, which Kobayashi pointed out. Shouta, who was evidently raised properly, apologizes for not considering Lucoa’s feelings, but Lucoa didn’t like the implication that she wasn’t wanted in his house and hastily replies that she still wants to stay in his house.

As for Lucoa, she wants to be accepted as a dragon instead of a demon, at the very least. She does find Shouta adorable so maybe there’s a chance she wants more than that? This is all just conjecture at this point. But if she wants Shouta to accept her as a dragon, then why does Lucoa not reveal her true form to him?

I thought there was an interesting parallel between mages and dragons. Both are entities that apparently do not belong in this world and will one day return to their original worlds. But while Shouta is trying to get accepted by his family so he can become a full-fledged mage and assist in their efforts to return to their original world, most of the dragons (such as Tohru, Kanna, and Lucoa) are trying to get their human partners / caretakers to acknowledge them so they can stay in this world in harmony and for a longer period of time.

The third segment showcased Fafnir’s life with Takiya, Tohru’s co-worker. Apparently Fafnir is now a video game addict and accompanies Takiya to idol events. However, he doesn’t really care for the nickname, “Faf-kun.”

While accompanying Takiya to the aforementioned event, Fafnir muses about how humans can either be hit or miss. He personally prefers humans that are misses since he would know how they really are right away and wouldn’t have to spend time trying to figure out whether or not they’re truly decent people.

And as it turns out, he’s already made his mind up on Takiya. Aww.

To me, it seems like Fafnir was trying to be accepted and trying to accept. He wanted to be accepted by someone who truly appreciates him and treats him kindly. Perhaps he wasn’t actually aware of this inner desire considering how he has always been quick to suggest that the best solution is murdering all humans, but his talk about humans being “hit or miss” implies he really wanted to be with someone who didn’t want to get close to him for selfish reasons. Takiya is such a person, so Fafnir accepts him.

We also get to see a few clips of Tohru, Kanna, and Kobayashi hanging teruterubouzo in an attempt to stop the rain as well as hanging out in the rain. The teruterubouzo doesn’t exactly work since the downpour continues, but the girls, content to just spend some time together, accept the rain.
